Religion versus Grace

Luke 7:36-50 (NIV)

Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. 37When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner."

40Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you."
      "Tell me, teacher," he said.

41"Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[d] and the other fifty. 42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?"

43Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled."
"You have judged correctly," Jesus said.

44Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

48Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

49The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"

50Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

1. Grace responds with heartfelt gratefulness for something undeserved while law is ungrateful because “I” am the one making all the effort

2. Grace always has something to offer God in worship because much has been received and perceived while law has little to offer God in worship

3. Grace sees one's sins in relation to God and ultimately to God alone while the law finds justification and approval in comparison to others

4. Grace focuses on what Jesus has done while law focuses on what oneself has done for God – grace is Christ-centered while law is self-centered

5. Because grace receives, grace has much to give; because law receives little, law has little to give – for one who receives much will love much!

6. Grace allows us the freedom and courage to face our wickedness while law is blind even to its own wickedness

7. Grace leads to relationship while law to tiring performance

Ephesians 3:14-19 (NLT)

When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.

8. Grace leads to a humble attitude while law leads to a proud attitude

9.  Grace looks to faith or what Jesus can do while law looks at how we can do it leading to doubt

John 6:28-29 (NIV)

Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" 29Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

10. The two gifts of the abundance of grace and the gift of approval leads to reigning in life, victory and the abundant life!

Romans 5:17 (NLT)

For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:17 (NIV)

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

      a. Grace believers reign in life (ἐβασίλευσεν – ebasileusen)

      b. Grace believers receives and keeps receiving

    c. Grace believers focus on Christ and dare to interpret everything from the perspective of abundant grace

Lift up our focus to the level of God’s victory rather than bringing our eyes down to the level of our pains and difficulties

Prayer:

When I look at You, all things become possible

When I am in You, nothing is impossible

When I turn away, good things seem impossible

Let me gaze at You, to live the impossible (AO)
